Why we do not keep your receipts forever

Export shipped a few weeks ago, and it made me look properly at what we are holding. A receipt photo is not a number. It is a picture with a shop, a street, a time and a card ending in four digits in it, and a pile of them is a map of somebody's month.

So the photos have an end date, and it is on the plan you are on.

How long a photo is kept

• Solo: one year.

• Household: three years.

• Crew: seven years, because that is the range people on Crew tend to be asked for.

• After that, the entry stays — date, category, amount — and the picture goes.

The blurred square in that screenshot is my own money, which is the other half of this. We blur our own figures in our own screenshots, and the app will never post your numbers anywhere on your behalf.

If you want a photo past its date, export before it expires. The CSV includes a link to every picture it still has, and the export is the reason we are comfortable deleting anything at all.
